Black-winged Blackbird at Huntley Meadows

We were over at Huntley Meadows last Saturday.  It is one of our favorite places to visit during the year and at every season there is something marvelous about the place.

The first time I saw the Red-winged Blackbird all those years ago I was enthralled.  You can read about him here.  They were everywhere and we got quite a show as nesting season is in full swing.  We watched numerous times as they disappeared into the underbrush, presumably to take care of their young.

  2. Gosh, I'd forgotten about red-winged blackbirds! We saw them all the time when I was a child; they lived around the lagoon nearby and I loved that flash of red when they flew. I wonder if they are still there.

Speaking of blackbirds, when I was in England in 2009 I heard the English blackbirds singing...they sound so much prettier than our blackbirds. I wonder if you have noticed that?

  4. I have seen Mr.Blackbird this morning not as fancy as your American ones but their singing is wonderful to hear. How do he red winged ones compare? Lovely photos.

  10. They are beautiful birds. Several pairs of them nest in the cattails in the creek behind our house. It's fun to watch them come and go.

  12. They are such gorgeous birds. I guess it's because of the color contrast. I'll keep my eyes open for them when we get ourselves to the mainland in September.
