What do we plant?
~Henry Abbey~
What do we plant when we plant the tree?
We plant the ship which will cross the sea.
We plant the mast to carry the sails.
We plant the planks to withstand the gales,
The keel, the keelson, the beam, the knee.
We plant the ship when we plant the tree.
What do we plant when we plant the tree?
We plant the houses for you and me.
We plant the rafters, the shingles, the floors.
We plant the studding, the lath, the doors,
The beams and siding, all parts that be.
We plant the house when we plant the tree.
What do we plant when we plant the tree?
A thousand things that we daily see.
We plant the spire that out-towers the crag.
We plant the staff for our country's flag.
We plant the shade from the hot sun free.
We plant all these when we plant the tree.

Wonderful poem and photos ! Have a great day !
Wonderful post! In a way it made me sad though....you know, the idea of planting the tree just to use. I love real wood things, though so I guess I'm a hypocrite! :-)
I wish you could get out this way some time. Let me know, and we'll meet at the Sonora Desert Museum! :-)

I also very much enjoyed seeing all your birds on the earlier post, great captures. The Grackle has amazing colours in its plumage!
Such a lovely poem Denise and I don't remember hearing of it before. How many of us would think beyond just growing the newly planted tree. Lovely pictures too. A x

What a great poem about a tree.
