Camera Critters

I passed this rather lovely dog patiently waiting for its human after I had gone shopping yesterday. You can enlarge the photo for better detail. The sun was behind him but I didn't feel like I could go up and ask him to pose in the other direction!

I hope he didn't have to wait too long. Just look at that face, adorable! If only he could speak.

"You might think I was sad from the expression on my face,
As if I were about to wail.
But honestly my friend, I would show you how happy I am,
If I wasn't sitting on my tail!"

I went shopping today and I took these photos from a parking lot. After so much rain yesterday I was glad to see these lovely blue skies with lots of puffy clouds.

Nature Notes

Fossils
by Ogden Nash

At midnight in the museum hall
The fossils gathered for a ball

There were no drums or saxophones,
But just the clatter of their bones

A rolling, rattling, carefree circus
Of mammoth polkas and mazurkas.

Pterodactyls and brontosauruses
Sang ghostly prehistoric choruses.

Amid the mastodontic wassail
I caught the eye of one small fossil.

"Cheer up, sad world," he said, and winked,
"It's kind of fun to be extinct."

Not really but it is Ogden Nash and he is one of my favorite poets, who always puts such a positive spin on things.

My photos were taken at the Natural History Museum in Balboa Park, San Diego.

Camera Critter

This is Pricilla. We met her when we visited Balboa Park on our trip to San Diego in September. She was with her human parents who were having a picnic nearby with a couple of other friends. Priscilla decided to take a walk and was munching on the grass when we came across her. She had attracted quite a crowd. After a while her family thought it was time to retrieve her. She took her own sweet time. I have an idea that Priscilla was a little stubborn as she ignored them at first. Eventually - only when she was ready - she ambled her way back, but only after being tempted by a tasty morsel this young lady offered her.

A full-grown Vietnamese potbellied pig can weigh between 100 to 250 pounds but are considered miniature compared to their cousin, the farm hog, whose weight can exceed a thousand pounds.

We have only had this type of pig in the US since 1985 and are still in the learning stage. It is thought that they live between 10 to 15 years of age. The average, full-grown pot-bellied pig can reach in height anywhere from 16 to 24 inches from its shoulders.

SkyWatch Friday

Last weekend I caught most of an amazing sunrise in Virginia Beach.

Nature Notes

I believe this very interesting specimen is called a Dragon Tree. You can find out about it if you click here.

In the photo below I am standing next to the trunk looking up towards its branches.
