Watery Wednesday # 55

From my archives. I scanned another older photo for this week's share, a man and his dog walking on the beach on a cold day. We were at Chick Beach in Virginia Beach back in 2001. My ex-Navy hubby says that the ship returning to port looked like a Naval amphibious ship that carries Marines. Today is the first time I have put socks on. It was downright nippy in our house. When I came across this photo it spoke to me. Not winter yet, it's going to warm up a little tomorrow thankfully.

"I Started Early"

~Emily Dickinson~

I started Early -- Took my Dog
And visited the Sea
The Mermaids in the Basement
Came out to look at me

And Frigates -- in the Upper Floor
Extended Hempen Hands
Presuming Me to be a Mouse
Aground -- upon the Sands

But no Man moved Me -- till the Tide
Went past my simple Shoe
And past my Apron -- and my Belt
And past my Bodice -- too

And made as He would eat me up
As wholly as a Dew
Upon a Dandelion's Sleeve
And then -- I started -- too

And He -- He followed -- close behind
I felt his Silver Heel
Upon my Ankle -- Then my Shoes
Would overflow with Pearl

Until We met the Solid Town
No One He seemed to know
And bowing -- with a Mighty look
At me -- The Sea withdrew.

  1. That scene does look cold. Looks like the dog is really enjoying himself. I like the crashing waves and the boat in the distance...nice mood!

  2. It looks like a beautiful walk along the shore.
    Sydney - City and Suburbs

  3. Hello Denise
Now that really does look cold - I can almost feel the wind blowing
My socks are still on my feet, don't think Winters going anywhere even tho its officially spring lol
    Take care

  4. That is such a sweet scene, Denise. I could use a bit of your nippiness over here. It was too hot for my liking.

  5. There is something special about winter at the beach, Is that a war ship in the background? Love your poem too. I'm glad that you are enjoying my trip in northern Australia. Thanks for your comments.

  6. Excellent shot Denise, the giant boat in the background adds the perfect touch.

    All the best

  7. Wonderful poem dear Denise, thanks so much for this fabulous post .The picture fits so well with the words!

  8. Great poem to accompany your photo. I prefer beaches in winter - so clean and empty.

  9. Lovely verse and the photo does look cold and windy. I do always love the beach scenes though, thanks for sharing.

  10. Oh that does look chilly. Love the poem. I can't believe how quickly our weather changed. We had 110 degrees 3 days in a row and then yesterday was just 74-- which I think is perfect.

  11. The view of the beach with the ship in the distance is delightful, Denise. I also enjoyed the lovely poem by E.D.

  12. The boat in the distance looks close enough to almost touch. It is chilly here too. The temperature is not expected to get above the mid 50s until Saturday, when a balmy 63 degrees is forecasted.

  13. Oh that is beautiful it is same in mine a beach too. Happy watery Wednesday.

  14. It looks cold, but what a wonderful beach! It must be an idyllic place to walk and look at the sea for hours.

  15. Oh i like this photo very much & i like the ship in the distance too - adds to the shot!

  16. Funny - I always judge the weather by the sock-wearing too. I'm still in loafers-no-socks but actually purchased a new pair of ankle boots today, which is truly a sign!

  17. wow lovely scenery...th boat makes it lovelier..

  18. thanks for your visit Denise..I always love your photos here..have great start of October! tc too!

  19. Lovely. Your last couple of posts, with the poems to go along are wonderful.

  20. I like the Autumn leaves as your header.

This seems to be such a busy time of year, getting things cut back and taken out to the city collection spot for grass, items from the yard and etc. Because we know winter is just around the corner.

Oh my, where did this summer go, in fact where did 2009 go?

  21. Great photo! I would love a beach to walk on like that! It was cold here today too! I turned my car heater on as I headed to work.

  22. This is a lovely photo.Wish I were there.

  23. Yay, I love your new header, its a welcome sign of Fall. We have opposite weather, it is still warm here!

The dog is enjoying his time at the beach!

    Keep your toes warms!

  24. I can feel that ocean breeze, brrrr! Memories of walking my dog at the Cape. Great Emily Dickinson.
    Sunny :)

  25. oooo....so atmospheric. I love the beach in all its moods. lovely poem.

  26. Good picture, a big boat in the background!

  27. A wonderful beach that is and oh.. those waves..! :)

  28. We can feel the change in seasons..but it takes a bit longer. We don't have snow on the Mountain yet either. At night, we still sleep with the fan on above but I have a small pillow over my ear! Gives you an idea of the tropics! The poem was excellent with the picture by the way- Have a great weekend-
