Camera Critters

Another post from the Virginia Scottish Games and Festival we attended last weekend.

The Kennel Club recognizes twelve breeds of dog as being Scottish.
Bearded Collie
Cairn Terrier
Dandie Dinmont Terrier
Deerhound
Golden Retriever
Gordon Setter
Rough Collie and Smooth Collie
Scottish Terrier
Shetland Sheepdog
Skye Terrier
West Highland White Terrier

According to Scottish tradition, the sound of the dog barking or howling was a bad omen.  I am very happy to say that no dogs were barking or howling at the Parade of Dogs.  In fact, nothing could be heard over the sound of those glorious bagpipes.

We saw many little dogs that day, and they all got along very well, except for one minor argy-bargy between a Dachshund and a Westie, when we were sitting on the grass under the shade of a tree, eating fish and chips.  I was so startled I almost dropped my chips! The Dachshund barked at the Westie when he walked by, who I think was scared by the sudden appearance of the Westie who had been obscured by his human companion.  They had a little back and forth and gave each other a royal telling off.  Otherwise all the blessed little darlings that we saw were very well behaved.

There were many in traditional clothing.
I couldn't choose just one photo.  This charming little model gave me several poses.  I think she was telling me that this was her best side.

Or maybe it was this side.  I can't remember and I think she got a little confused too.

Camera Critters is another wonderful meme created by Misty Dawn and hosted by Misty and Tammy. You can find other critter photos by clicking here.

  4. What fun! I love bagpipes though we had one memorable dinner in the mess when the pipes went round - and round - and round at the end of a fairly long formal dinner. The men were bursting but couldn't leave the table before the pipers had finished!

  8. And they say Americans aren't whimsical! Never heard of this event, but it sounds quite wonderful, thanks for sharing the dog photos. We live right by a high school with a big Scottish event each year, but don't think they have dressed up dogs!
