Watery Wednesday - Whale Watching

Thought this would be a good Watery Wednesday post too. Thank you 2sweetnsaxy for hosting another lovely meme. You can find more watery photos by visiting here.

Two days ago we went on a whale watching cruise. Even if we hadn't have seen any whales it would have been well worth the trip as it gave us a beautiful view of the coastline, and I love being on the water looking out over the ocean. It is something I rarely get to do living in Northern Virginia.

It was a two-and-a-half hour trip and we spent most of that looking for our first sighting. We stood out on the deck a long time and we were beginning to think we would be out of luck, but after patiently searching we finally saw them, a pair of humpback whales. It was a thrilling sight. Even though the boats won't get that close to them we could still make them out.

You can find information about these whales here.

Don't forget to enlarge the photos by right-clicking on them.

We were told that they appear quickly and then dive. Fortunately Gregg who has the better eyesight was fast enough to take these shots. In the photo below you can just make out the hump of one before the tail appeared.

And as our son so eloquently put it when we sent him these pictures, "Wow, if you've got tail, you've got whale!" It was so exciting and we felt we had been given a great gift.

We also got to see twenty to thirty spinner dolphins earlier on. If you enlarge the photo below you can actually see one with his nose out of the water. Another beautiful sight and they were in view a lot longer.
You can find information about them here.

  6. Thanks for sharing your cool trip to Hawaii. It's totally fun to watch the whales in their natual environment. Stacey and I spent a few months in Maui several years back and it would be the greatest thing to hear the Humpback Whales vocalizing as we snorkeled and free dived near shore. Their songs and vocalizations travel such great distances. It looks and sounds like you are having a wonderful time. I hope you continue to enjoy each Moment in Aloha.
