I didn't get any decent shots of the sky this week so I went into my archives and got a couple from a trip up to Niagara Falls a few years ago. It was a joyous occasion as my sister and niece were visiting and this was an all girls' weekend only. We took a couple of days to get there and what a road trip it was. We had an incredible time, the icing on the cake seeing those incredible Falls.

It was the first for my niece and me, but my sister had visited 25 years previously, with her husband when he was in Canada on a business trip. Gregg and I were living in Rhode Island at the time and they eventually came down and visited us there. He was in the navy back then.
These two photos were taken on the Canadian side. We stayed in one of the many hotels overlooking the Falls - right hand side of the picture - on the 22nd floor. I remember saying to the gentleman at the desk when I called to book a room, "Are you sure we will have a good view of the Falls from our room?" He patiently said, "Yes Madam, you'll have a great view of them" and that we did. The hotels are designed so that each guest will have a great view. The three of us just sat on the floor because the windows were floor to ceiling, and took it all in. I don't think we moved for a couple of hours as we were so in awe of them. Then we thought it would be a good idea to go down and see them up close. I'll share more photos in a later post.

  2. Wow..your hotel sounds like a dream come true. We were their twice and did not have a view of the falls from our hotel...but then we went on a special package deal that cost next to nothing and were pretty happy. Your photo of the sky is breathtaking. Did you visit the greenhouse there? We loved it very much. And the falls are glorious. Well, I got here from Winifred's blog...just visiting some new places. Hope you have a good week....

  4. The first photo is very mysterious, reminds me of the land of dragons and other fairy folk playing hide and seek between the clouds. I'm in love with that first photo <3

  5. Hello again Denise, I'm checking back in - apologies for using your blog, but I guess I didn't keep your e-mail address.

I'm still wondering about the caricature you requested for your FIL. My records show that you were going to get me some photos of him, and we were still discussing just exactly the doodle should look like.

If you've changed your mind, or if you want to postpone it, that's okay too. I just need to know. As it is, I've been moving on to other illustration request on my list.

I look forward to hearing from you.

  17. These are great photos! I love Niagara Falls and have been 3 times...always the Canadian side. I will have to try the other side next time. Your room really did have a great view. I don't remember ever being that close in whatever motel we stayed at. I love just standing and looking at all that water.

  20. Beautiful pictures. I live quite close to Niagara Falls and because it is an easy day trip, I have never stayed in a hotel there.

  25. I've ony been to the Canadian side, but unfortunately the falls were turned off for maintenance!
Great to see your splendid picture.
It looks like the spume is fine enough to ascend as a cloud. Magnificent!

  26. All these years I've been in NY and never went to the falls!! I've only seen them from the air at a good distance up! Now we're moving to Alabama...Silly me!

  36. I really like this shot. The moon is just visible.

Niagara Falls is a fun place to visit. We spent our honeymoon there and went back for our anniversary a couple years ago. It's not that far from us, so we've visited it seeral times for day trips.

  37. I love the layering of the clouds, with the big fluffy one in the background and the whispy ones in front. (I'm getting very technical with the terms. I know. Sorry. LOL) Also love the way the moon balances it on the right.

It's been years since I was at Niagra, but I remember thinking that no words or photos can adequately do it justice. It's one of those things you have to see for yourself in real life.

  38. I also saw the Falls from the Canadian side. But at that time I did not have a digital camera, so I need to scan my photos.

Your photos are great and so is your story. In the second photo the sky seems to be falling into the falls, or vice versa......

  39. hi denise. lovely pics, especially of one of the world's great wonders. i prefer the canadian side. tidier and less "touristy" than the u.s. side imho.

    cheers :)

  41. Aren't the falls wonderful? My husband's family lives in southern Ontario, a fairly easy drive away. We visited the falls once while we were there seeing family.

  42. Its great that you were able to get the moon in there too. Keep enjoying Nature.
